Update: It seems after some digging this may have been more knee-jerk reactions to scare tactics, in response to DA’s Terms of Service, that is.

DA Response: phoenixleo.deviantart.com/jour…

Official Post from the original artist: jjharrison.tumblr.com/post/854…

Article about Hot Topic T-Shirt Debacle: www.dailydot.com/parsec/devian…

So false alarm, things are not as dire as assumed, and I only upload resized and watermarked pieces here anyway. Still, as I told my watchers on Tumblr, if you like my pieces enough to save them locally then by all means go ahead in case I take them down in future. It’s not like I can’t really stop you, can I? :P

That's what I get for buying in to chain messages!!

_____________________________________________

Well this is horrible.

In case you haven't seen this yet, DeviantArt's malicious little fine print is allowing them to use your work - ANY of it - at the drop of a hat and for whatever they desire. This does not only apply for use around their site, but also to sell to third parties without your permission and without you seeing a cent:
</strike>

quartervirus.tumblr.com/post/1…

I’d heard rumours of this as far back as 2007 or 2008 and ignored them, then a few years ago I more friends dropped out of DA for the same reason, but I thought nothing of it. But this is getting ridiculous.

Just a heads-up for my watchers: I will be moving my art and deleting my DA.

It’s shit, and it’s unfortunate, as I met so many friends and fans through DA and received so much support through my darkest times. It was a huge part of my artistic development for the last decade and I doubt I would be where I am now if I didn’t have the resources and the community it presented.

But this is not how you treat a dedicated fanbase, this is not how you reward your community. And if this is what they think of artists, then they do not deserve our support.

So I will be packing up shop and moving elsewhere. Not sure where yet, perhaps I will finally get around to that ArtStation account, or set up an Instagram. My art will remain up for several days as I need to save and sort some old pieces, but in the meantime Patreon is already the best place to find me for art, followed by Tumblr for daily nonsense and drabbles. God only knows what else is hidden in their Terms of Service, but one can only hope nothing quite so heinous as the bullshit DA is pulling.

So ... so long, and farewell, it's been a wild ride. I will miss all the memories of this place, but this is not the treatment we deserve.

Hi guys,

Just an additional update in case you missed the news (as I know people are wont to skip over Patreon advertisements or promotional material ...) for THIS MONTH ONLY I am offering sketch rewards to ALL who sign up for $10 tiers and up.

Why?? I am saving for a Wacom MobileStudio Pro which will help me IMMENSELY with my productivity down the road. It takes me twice the time to sketch and outline a piece digitally on my Intuos than it does traditionally, and finally owning some kind of cintiq would bridge that gap and really help me to churn out all the drawings and comics and silly goodness I have knocking around in my brain. Unfortunately, such a cinch piece of tech also comes with one helluva price tag, that's where you come in.

To help make this happen, for THIS MONTH ONLY, I am waiving the raffles and will give EVERYONE a guaranteed reward appropriate to their tier!! That means ALL $10 Patrons will receive a headshot, ALL $20 will receive a bust, and ALL $50-60 Patrons will receive a full-body drawing of their choice. So if you've ever wanted a drawing or commission from me, now's your chance to nab one!

If this sounds like something you're interested in, do check out the additional information here:

NEW Patron Tiers!! by Quarter-Virus

Rewards will be started in August, after July's pledges have been processed, as Patreon charges towards the end of the month. I am aiming to finish as many as possible during livestreams so I can interact with everyone, and as always, once I have sent you the file you are free to do with it as you wish! Colour it, crop it, use it as an icon, go crazy!!

Thank you all for your support and I hope to have you along for this little milestone!

TL;DR: Saving for new Wacom, will guarantee you a commission if you pledge for this month ONLY!!!

Hi guys!

Another month, another livestream! Hangover permitting, I hope to host another Patron Livestream this Saturday 11th, starting from 10 a.m. UTC+08:00 (plus or minus an hour, we have a company party that sprung up on me ...) They usually run for at least two or three hours, but I may run later depending on how things go.

Patrons in the $20 category receiving full-body sketches this month are Chris and Jovioski, and Patrons in the $10 category receiving sketch-busts are Naziha Zahed and JS Mouret. If you think your name should be on this list but it isn't, your payment may have been declined, or wasn't processed for some reason.

Do get thinking about what you'd like me to draw! If you have any character sheets or references, please send them to shamine.king@gmail.com before Saturday 10 a.m.

Thank you all for your continued support. I hope to hear from you soon, and meet you in the livestream!

Hi guys, this is an announcement for a friend looking for artists interested in producing concept art for a 10-minute science fiction short film. The art would be used for a Kickstarter, as well as to provide direction for the designer. There is a budget but they are willing to pay normal rates for art.

The film takes place in a universe where Napoleonic-era military uniforms meet 70′s cyberpunk. If that sounds like your jam, please drop an e-mail to brendan.julian@gmail.com for more details!

So I finally got up off my lazy ass and made an official Facebook page for my art. Please follow me there if you are interested, though I will mostly post finished or polished pieces. Tumblr and Twitter are still the best places to keep up with my sketches and scraps, as well as here on DA, though I don't update as often.

I've received a lot of friend requests in the past from people I don't know, presumably students from LASALLE or fans from DA, but I don't feel comfortable accepting stranger's requests. I reserve my personal Facebook account only for people I know personally, so I would prefer it if people followed this public account instead. Thanks!

Here are the rest of my official links:

Games/Misc Tumblr: awkwardtimezone.tumblr.com/
Twitter: twitter.com/quartervirus

I hope to set up a Patreon in future, though I am unsure how productive I will be. I have a full-time job that leaves me drained by the end of the day, and though I still try to draw as much as I can the thought of letting down the people willing to pay is intimidating. On the flipside, it may encourage me to get back on track with personal projects such as graphic novels (involving certain OCs) which has been a strong pull.

Hi all,

I'm sure many of you have noticed the huge influx of Devations the last few weeks. I've been trying to get DA all done and dusted before the New Year, and while layouts and icons still aren't done I'm happy to announce that all pictures from the past two years have been updated.

So good news, no more Deviations flooding your inbox. Back to my regular slow upload speed of ... one picture every 2-3 weeks.

I hope to get an ArtStation and Patreon set up eventually, but in the meantime these damn websites have had me so stressed I've been getting periodically ill every 3-4 weeks since trying to get them all sorted. In fact I wouldn't have been able to finish these uploads if I hadn't been stranded at home with a dual case of tonsilitis and a fever right now.

So Merry Christmas and all that, enjoy the art.

Years and years ago I made a "Quartervirus" account just to save the name, then I deactivated it thinking that would free up the name again but apparently not. Maybe I can talk to a DA Dev and convince them to change it for me, but until then hyphens it is. My art Tumblr is one word, however:

Art Tumblr: Quartervirus
Games Tumblr: AwkwardTimezone

All art tagged #sakart. Backgrounds and layouts are still a work in progress but I've finally updated the art from the last two years. I will be chipping away at DeviantArt over the next few weeks.

--Sak
Hey guys,

Just a heads up that both DA and Tumblr are still very much in progress and I'm trying to sort out all this old crap before updating with anything new. Currently I am combining my gaming blogs into one overall Tumblr account at AwkwardTimezone. I recommend waiting before following it. At the moment I'm spamming everyone's dash with art and RP logs and I doubt many of them are happy.

First of all, I want to say a huge THANK YOU for all of the birthday wishes. I never expected to receive any, especially after being gone for so long, and never even thought to check back here until a friend told me that I ought to see what was going on. So thank you all, and it was really heartwarming to read.

It's hard to believe it's been two years since I was last here, but I was transitioning from college to working full-time, and maintaining an online presence just wasn't working for me. I am still struggling to find a good balance between work, play, and personal projects, but I am finally in a comfortable enough position to get my art websites back up and on track. It's about damn time, I think. So time permitting I plan on making some big changes around here.

For those who miss my old stuff: I will be taking my drawings out of storage and sorting them into an "Archives" folder. You will be able to view all of my old fanart and comics, but keep in mind most of that stuff is three to four years old, if not older. I've moved on from many of those interests, and my opinions (and behavior, thank goodness for that) may have changed. I am not sure if I will edit the artist's comments or disable comments on my old work, I am still undecided on that front. I will also not likely draw many of them anymore, I hope you understand.

Regretfully, I am also unable to be as proactive as I once was with answering people's questions, or chatting in the comments as I used to. I hope to get a FAQ up and running so that hopefully I can address most of your concerns, but with life being what it is now ... you know how it goes. Once again I seek your respectful understanding in that.

For those who are aware of or have been following my Tumblr blogs:

I plan on making some big changes around there too within the next few weeks. I will be combining my three gaming blogs ascottlegacy (SWTOR), neutrollhere (WoW), and awkwardtimezone (Wildstar) into one overall gaming art blog that may also include miscellanous games fanart like my old Assassin's Creed stuff. I also intend to make a separate blog for personal art/characters/miscellaneous fanart, and a separate one for the stupid mishmash I can’t resist reblogging, so as to avoid spamming your dash with crap. All art--gaming and personal--will be uploaded here to DA first.

I may also create a public Facebook page for those who prefer it (and so people can please stop sending me friend requests. My personal FB account is just that: personal. Friends I know personally and family only). I will open an ArtStation account for the polished works I like enough to display in a more “professional” domain. I am considering Instagram for sketches, though I know little about it. I have seen other artists post sketches or quick doodles there, so I may explore that possibility. As of now I am still undecided on what to do with my Youtube account, which has remained mostly untouched for the better part of the last two years.

I will probably start making big changes next week, so if things start popping up or moving around or changing, you know why.

If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears.

And once again, thank you. The support I received from you guys was never far from my mind, and I hope I can continue to make you laugh and inspire young artists. That's why I want to return, and restore the old art, to remind people artists don't just happen overnight. And because making people smile and laugh is the greatest reward for doing what I do.

It's good to be back.

--Sak

I need a break.

From DeviantArt, Tumblr, WoW, TOR, all of it.

I don't like sharing aspects of my personal life anymore, but some things have happened and I need time alone. I apologize to anyone who's sent me a note in the past few weeks, whether on here or any of my other accounts; I won't be getting back to you. My Deviations are not deleted, merely hidden, but I have no intention of returning any time soon.

You've all been great.

Hi guys!

Do you like cute cartoon bugs? Toilet humour? Fart jokes? Have an odd sense of humour? Well if you're still sticking around and watching me and haven't gotten weirded out yet, you must have the last one, so you should totally go check out :iconaltalamatox:'s work on the new game Phil the Pill!

Altalamatox has been working with Curious Media to produce a new App game, and recently shared some of the concept work with us. You can find more of it on their official kickstarter page: www.kickstarter.com/projects/c… But in order to see the game through to the finish line they need help getting funds! Personally I love the art style and those vibrant colours holy craaaaap Alta how do you do that?!?!?!! and would LOVE to be able to play the final game. And who knows, if they get enough money pledged, they'll even be able to adapt it for the computer so I won't need a new phone to play it!

If you can't pledge money, please spread the word so that news of this fun new game gets around. Personally, I plan on pledging some and then leaving brash, obnoxious messages all over my various social media sites until somebody notices ... so what are you waiting for?!

PillVille needs you!!

Back at LASALLE

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 31, 2014, 11:37 PM

That's right, after two eye-opening months, my stay at Ubisoft is over (... which is a shame, because they were offering a prize to the person who could prank their colleagues the best this April Fools!).

It was a great experience; I got the chance to work on multiple projects in the company, doing everything from technical drawings, character concepts, to storyboarding and illustrations. I was constantly challenged to produce faster and better work, including some digital and matte paintings, which I still struggle with immensely. By the end of the two months I was finally getting a handle on things, but alas, all good things must come to an end. I wish I could share some of my work with you, but I am sworn to confidentiality.

I made some good friends while I was there; the art director is a friend to the animation program leader at LASALLE, and he purposefully challenged me to start practicing digital painting. I was sat next to the senior storyboard and concept artist at Ubisoft, and received constructive criticism straight from the source. I'm going to miss our Friday Concept Artist Lunches, swarming down on Star Vista like the starving art locusts we were ... and drinks at the end of the week courtesy of "Princess Harry".

So now I'm back at LASALLE. While I may not be able to share my Ubisoft work, I'm hoping to continue practicing those new skills I learned by applying it to my personal work. I am still illustrating Voltaire's picture book 'The Legend of Candy Claws', which takes up a LOT of my "spare" time, but I do plan on making a return to Honour Amongst Thieves when I can. I have been doodling a lot for the project and conceptualizing whenever I can, with the intent of developing the cast and story for a graphic novel format. As of now I am unsure if I will finish the animation itself; I really don't have the same zeal for animating as I do for comics and storytelling, and after slogging away at it for well over a year now, the initial enthusiasm I had for the animated short is all but extinguished. The characters and their interactions have developed well beyond the film, and I would rather begin sharing their new story with you, as opposed to telling the old one.

Just a brief life update for now. I am aware that I still have to make that FAQ journal; I have so many projects on my mind that I'm overflowing.

Stay fabulous.

Want to Work in the Industry?

Journal Entry: Thu Feb 27, 2014, 6:25 PM

:iconbjpentecost: made a very good journal entry where she briefly discusses what to expect in the film industry, and I thoroughly recommend reading it to familiarize yourself with what it's like:

If you are considering going into the industry....If you are an artist or want to be one, especially if you want to get into the VFX industry, you should watch this:

It touches on a few things I feel are important to understand as an artist and even as consumers of art:
1.) Art is not an exact science. It can be difficult to put a price tag on it, let alone the often very complicated processes of making it.
2.) Computers are tools that facilitate our work but they DO NOT do the work for us.
3.) Don't get into this industry for the money. If you go into this line of work, you do it because you love it. If someone happens to get lucky or has a really great idea and he/she hits it big, GREAT! Good for him/her. But don't go in expecting that to happen to you. Chances are it won't. If you are lucky, you will find a nice middleclass job you can support yourself and your family on for a while...... until....
4.) Unfortunately, a lot of employers see artists as disposable. When they no longer need you, they will kick you to the curb an

I also recommend following her link to this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lcB9u… which really drives home some of the issues with the demographic for artists/VFX in the world right now. As an animation graduate we are made aware of these discrepancies while still at college, and the hefty workloads and looming deadlines with zero compensation and lack of sleep could be considered a precursor to what we could expect in future.

A lot of people still seem to have rose-coloured glasses over their eyes in regards to what it must be like to be a "good artist" hired in the industry; this is the reality of it. You have to take the good with the bad, there are no guarantees, and you really, really have to love what you're doing.

Ask Me/FAQ

Journal Entry: Tue Feb 25, 2014, 10:56 PM

Hi guys,

Figured it's about time I made one of these: I've been an active member on DA since well back in 2005, and over the years have received tons of comments and notes asking me various things from what programs I use, to what animation at LASALLE was like, to why I am called "Canadian-Rainwater" when I clearly live in Singapore. I used to be able to answer all of these questions individually but unfortunately I can't always keep up with them anymore, so I would like to create a Frequently Asked Questions journal.  I will publish them in a FAQ soon, and I will try to categorize them to make navigation easier.

Feel free to ask anything, any questions about me or my art/process, characters, any personal questions, whatever. I'm generally pretty easy-going about these sorts of things.
