WARNING: OLD ART!! The art and comments in this Deviation may no longer represent the artist's current views or interests.

Homework for LASALLE College of the Arts: Uncut storyboard, attempting to exaggerate what each character represents. Louis's behaviour is still too foppish and dandy and retracts from the story itself and most of it will be cut.

Thanks to :iconfroggermea96: for suggesting the bonus scene after the credits.

My sister :iconthreevoices: is eager to write the final soundtrack, but the animation needs to be roughed out first for that.

Oh I love it! The three representatives, very nice. Gives Santiago some nice depth, too. The story seems to flow a lot better as well.

Only thing that seemed to come a bit out of the blue was that James winces when Louis' hair is cut-- he doesn't know Louis yet so it's a bit weird he knows it would that big a deal to him (he might guess, seeing how flamboyant he is, but suprise or curiousity would seem to fit better, especially because he winces in his second close-up, too).

That entire sequence has actually been cut now, and the ending entirely changed. But you're right, you make a good point.

So, out of curiosity, about how long would a storyboard of this length last? A few minutes? Maybe longer with the fight scenes?

This is probably around 5-6 minutes long. I'm desperately trying to cut it down.

Wonder if you'll ever manage to finnish this. It seem lots of work yet to be done to end this animation. What's your deadline?

The final animation will (hopefully) be shorter. I've got four months to produce it, outlined and fully colored. I'm fucked.

I like this version quite a bit more than the last one. More scenes that really paint the characters vividly--Louis in particular. I love the hair bit.

i really like this version, though the one critique i have is that when James is introduced, it feels like he knows to expect Louis, but then the banter makes it clear that they don't actually know each other. i personally would their relationship already established and this short act as a window for the audience to see it. the banter and animation can then suggest a relaxed nature between them despite the stress of dealing with Santiago as a two sides of the same coin kind of thing.
i love seeing the process though, and am anxious to see where the project goes. great work, and happy holidays!

There is nothing relaxed about James and Louis's relationship with each other, which is why I need to work on the end. Louis takes everything lightly and in his stride, James wants law and order. Their "relaxed" banter within my gallery is mostly out of character interaction.

i meant relaxed in comparison with the Spanish man, and through knowing what to expect (or not expect) from each other by knowing each other's characters. not relaxed as in "we're best friend even though we don't want to admit it"

I enjoyed this new version. Especially liked the expansion of Santiago's role. I agree that the end is weak--I liked your original proposal that the chest turn out to be full of costumes/hats. Perhaps as Louis is leaving with his arms full of hats, we see a bag of gold he'd snagged from under them.

BTW, the Union Jack did not exist in the 1500s. The flag you have with James wasn't adopted until the 1800s. In the 1500s, it would have just been the English flag of St. George's Cross. (Also, that 'table' is called an altar, and the cross is a crucifix, if those terms are of any use.)

The flag I know now and will be changed in the final animation. And for the meaning behind the story the box full of hats is even weaker than the current conclusion.

i love love love this, an hope it will someday be made into a real animation. the painting that they kept fighting over was a wonderfully hilarious scene so if anything you MUST keep that bit. i also loved the flow of Louis's movements. it was very clear in this that he moves like a flamboyant diva and his attitude sort of reminded me of RuePaul, but is still his own :D. wonderful come-backs

I really like the changes. Much of the dialogue feels better now. I especially like the exchange between Louis and Santiago.

S:This is a house of God!

L: And I just love what he's done with the place.

Made me laugh out loud.

I really hope I get a chance to see this when it's completed!

I like this version of Louis beating Santiago more, it shows he can absolutely take care of himself. (not to mention James onlooking their fight is great)
I don't have much to say that others haven't said already...
Anyway best of luck, it sure looks difficult to animate

I see that a lot of people are mentioning how unlikely it would be for Louis to enter enemy territory without a weapon...I tend to agree, but maybe you can combine this storyboard and the first one to get rid of this problem?

Louis can try to pick the lock with his foil, but because there's a large piece of wood behind the door that proves unsuccessful, not to mention that his foil gets caught, and perhaps breaks from the effort he uses to pull it out (or alternatively, remains stuck in the door and he can't pull it out...that might be better, since I'm not sure a well-made foil would break so easily). The noise he's made calls the guard to him. At that point, it's too late to go back and get another weapon if he wants to be sure of his success, so he uses the 'gold' line to sneak in. As he's slipping in, he might give the sword a side-long glance, but know he could improvise without it. (James pulling out Louis' foil from the door and tossing it aside or using it against its owner might be interesting as well...though I think he would prefer a different weapon).

Just an idea ^^; Maybe it'll help!
I love these characters very much, and with or without weapon it's a very fun storyboard with good meaning layered in such a short time.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately that's making a long scene longer instead of shortening the animation, so I'll have to see what happens in the final cut. But I'll definitely consider it.

You're right, I didn't keep the timing in mind. Well, with such great characters like these, and fun story lines I'm sure you'll come up with something amazing in the end, which will fit the limit =D I'm happy if my suggestion helped even a little.

I really like this one! The story seems to flow better as does the dialog and we get to see more of each character's personality. It's a shame it'll have to be cut down again... in fact I can see this as the opening for a full length film... Anyway, well done. Can't wait to see more. : )

I love this version the most because of Louis's fight. Also I like the addition of the panning shot of Louis's point of view in the cathedral. To me, in this version you paid more attention to the setting with having the characters interact with their surroundings. I enjoyed that very much. Can't to see more/what changes.

I actually like the idea of Santiago kicking the beggar rather than taking the coin. Him tossing the coin into the chest seemed awkward to me, how the chest just opens for him when it should be locked up secure. I know the idea of his greed is pretty important but I think him stopping to consider and then just kicking her while in possession of all that wealth still gets the point across.

I really like the fight through the pews and the use of the Crucifix additions though, they lend themselves to a more original and interesting fight than previously. I also adore Louis' little tirade and culminating bitch-slap, but where does his sword go? He is clearly pushing Santiago back with it, but when he takes the nut-shot and after, the sword is missing for no obvious reason. It especially irks at the point of slap since that is the hand that HAD the sword previously. I DO love how he ends up overpowering Santiago WITHOUT the sword, but it magically fades into nowhere and then he proclaims his unarmed-man-based safety with James who would probably be thinking otherwise (his whole body is clearly a dangerous weapon! LOL). Everything after, the banter and cooperative lifting is great. Just that one bit of interaction driving me crazy. Unfortunately, I can't think of any good suggestions for it, which is doubly frustrating!

Originally I was going to have Louis still armed with the sword, and he then drops it in James's face when prompted to fight. A kind of "Oops, I'm unarmed now. Too bad for that." But the first rule of acting or animation is not to turn your back on the audience, and if Louis slaps Santiago with the other hand, then both are turned away from the camera. If I flip the camera, then the sudden cut and change of location will be confusing, especially since the current angle is important to mark the location of the treasury in regards to the three characters. So at the moment he just drops it in order to land a harder kick. God forbid he should slice his own leg off in his rage. But I may change this.
