WARNING: OLD ART!! The art and comments in this Deviation may no longer represent the artist's current views or interests.

Homework for LASALLE College of the Arts: It's that time of year again, when I need to plow through my dozens of files to organize my drawings into some sort of presentable order.

More character sketches and development of Santiago, plus the extra characters from my animation.

I'm loving seeing your process here! This kind of in-depth thought and approach is dangerous for a creator, because it can result in a stiff story and character design, but it's also what can make a truly GREAT animation or graphic novel. You've married that sense of liveliness with the sense of depth extremely well here, and I have no doubt that your finished story will be just as lively.

Wow, thank you very much. =) I find that sometimes I just draw random shapes and designs first, and then later when I need to refine certain characteristics I go back with a fine-toothed comb and start adding the layers of depth to them. So far I think it's helped more than hindered.

I would agree that it's helped, you seem to have a really good balance of inspiration and perspiration in your work. I rarely see it so clearly expressed, either.

I really love your reasoning behind the development of the characters' appearances. and yet again very historically accurate and all the more effective for it.

So I finally got myself some blue pens to sketch out the basics first and then outline with something darker and more permanent and I think I'm in love. They help so much. o.o

All thanks to you. . . in a very moralistic sort of way. ;)

You are so very welcome! =D I love that technique. With enough practice the pencil lines can come out as smooth as with pens or digital inks.

It's definitely helpful to just get the shape and anatomy size down in blue before completely ruining the paper. Especially since I press so hard as it is.

And I would so love to see the "Aristocracy is Back!" image fleshed out someday. XD

In case you are wondering if all this prep work is worth it, it TOTALLY pays off, especially with the the church guys, who have an entire history told in nothing but posture. and yes mooks are HARD, especially when you spend so much time making characters look distinctive. and DAT CHURCH. Menace of Gothic, opulence of baroque, and horror of a bad acid trip. I love it.

I found it very interesting to see how you developed the Inquisitor. It does take away with showing his face and plus, the hood completely covering with using the eye slits as facial movement makes it seem more cartoon like which is good. (Since this is a cartoon.)

The earlier monk looked like a scientist from a Doctor Frankenstein cartoon. Out all of the "holy" Spain peeps, I like his final design the best.

This refuses to load beyond very low-rez for me, but it remains JUST as impressive as the rest of your sketchdumps. May I ask how you developed your style, if you know?

I've been drawing since I could hold a crayon, and this was before the days of the Internet. My style came mostly from drawing from life, but I only started picking up tricks to notice when ie: drawing figures once I started really paying attention in art courses. I joined DA about six years ago and the work of :iconshoomlah: :iconenolianslave: :iconabigailryder: were major influences for me.

Thanks! I really love your style, and I'd love to incorporate more of it into my own. I know one of the three, but not the other two. This is really nice, though, so thanks again!

Love how animated and expressive ( of character ) the "finalized" sketches for the three priests are. I LOVE the differing shapes-- That's something I really adore in all these sketchdumps, the use of shapes in form is something I really love and would like to learn for myself. They say so much more than generic figures and faces with the same features.

Absolutely wonderful, thank you!!! ♥

There's an idea if you get stuck in a drawing rut: doodle random shapes and plug characters into them, see what happens. :D

When I saw the final design for the monk I immediately thought of Christopher Lee. I even read the "Still waters run deep" line in Lee's voice.

He does resemble him a bit. He was inspired by Fagin from Oliver Twist, but once he started to look like Lee I went down that road.

Hahaha, oh lord, some of the notes on the priests had me snorting so much that I had to grab a tissue. xD Amazing progress. Adore the little black sketches on the bottom right. The grid had me cringing a little at first, but it's actually got its charm, too!

I was wondering if you drew your characters naked first or not when you experimented with different designs/body types. Maybe a silly thing to wonder about. :P

Anyway, the priest guys look interesting.
