Maquette - James Hunter by Quarter-Virus Maquette - James Hunter by Quarter-Virus

WARNING: OLD ART!! The art and comments in this Deviation may no longer represent the artist's current views or interests.

Homework for LASALLE College of the Arts: Students are required to create at least one maquette of the characters from our animations, to help us draw them from different angles. While I prefer working with Super Sculpey than ZBrush, I am not at all happy with my final statuettes which is why I haven't uploaded them until now.

Modeled with super sculpey over a wire skeleton, reinforced with superglue and padded with aluminum foil. Spray-painted neutral grey after baking.

How wonderful! In case you need to do Louis... you'll probably have to either find some super wirework, or go for semiprone :3

But hey, if Tim Burton can get his noodle characters stay together for stop-motion filming...

Although none of those have such magnicent hair.

Have a look at my fan sculpt of Louis. All he needs is the heart under his eye and he's done.. If you'd like, i'll post a picture of him completly finished.. His hands are too big tho, and his hair was a nightmare to make.. good fun in other words hehe. I hope you like it..

you are really good at this, except the faces look a wee but off. Are you going to paint them? I mean, I think it'll add more depth to their faces. Paint him pleaaaaaaaaase!

We don't paint the maquettes. They're made in the industry to provide a 3-dimensional reference of 2D characters for the inbetweeners, hence they are painted a neutral gray only.

Oh! Thanks c: Have you ever considered making statuettes? Of Louis and James? That would be SO cool.

I doubt it. I prefer them unpainted to be honest. It's too easy for paint to get messy, and can make a good sculpt look cheap.

He's getting ready to pole dance.

I am so very sorry. My mind has been in the gutter as of late, forgive me for that comment.

I really like the back and yes, sculpting isn't easy. (Sculpey = Cosplay prop's best friend!)

Cool stuff. I'm a miniatures sculptor myself (link of shameless self-promotion), so it's particularly interesting to see your efforts at such things.

As for Louis, I can see he is going to be quite a challenge structurally - it might be possible to have him standing, but I'd suggest steel wire as thick as his ankles would allow, and doing most of the volume under/in his hair with something a lot less dense than clay.

Balsa might do it - it'd cut to shape quite easily and a solid shape of it should be strong enough to sculpt the top layer over. But most importantly, it's about a tenth the density of Sculpey, which would get the weight right down.

Mind you, I'm guessing a bit on how large these maquettes are - so that might be overkill if the weight's not actually going to be that bad.

WOW. THE DETAILS ON THAT SCULPT YOU MADE. We pad the sculptures with aluminum foil to keep it light, and to cut down on sculpey because of how pricey it is. But the rule of thumb is generally the more points of contact, the better, and he definitely needs anywhere from three to four points screwed into the ground.

This is actually pretty good! Better than my little Sculpey creations. Haha. But then again I kind of just go with the flow when I scult and end up with weird creatures. . . I want to see Louis, too!

Oooo... That slim body with that hair... Why not a lounging pose for Louis? 4 Points of contact being a foot, his tiny little bum, an elbow, and his luxurious hair?

Maquettes need to be comfortable to look at, so lying poses are sturdy but awkward to look at. Besides that, they're originally used as a 360 reference for inbetweeners to look at besides character sheets, so standing is ideal.

Aaah, I remember when I had to clay a figure once for art class... It was by far not as detailed as this, but even that simple figure of mine made my fingers and especially its joints sore!

For someone whose main hobby isn't sculpting, I dare say it looks pretty neat. And dem boots~ They were clearly made for walking~ ... Except not really, of course. You're not doing a stop-motion animation, after all. ;P
