If you feel the French flagpole is too pushed, perhaps a smaller one mounted on a beached rowboat?

This is an excellent storyboard. You've probably heard this before but the flow is a lot like one of the more classic Disney's (like Hunchback of Notre Dame) but for an older audience. Love a colonial Caribbean setting too. I would definitely watch it.

I'll definitely consider it. Sadly flags seem to be necessary to tell the factions apart.

It's incredible that Louis can fight off somebody as bulky as the Spaniard when James who's bigger than Lois couldn't..... must be the powah of his heels... lol!

Beautiful work.

Really awesome, loving the "really?"
The first establishing shot of James at the gate I don't think is nessicary.
Second ending with the wigs and such is more comedic, I think I may prefer it. :D
(as much as I may like James, sorry mate.)

I can easily "read" the storyboard considering how tiny you drew each frame.

Hey, if 'Avengers' could have a working title of 'Group Hug,' I think your working title deserves a pass, too.

I love seeing the pre-production process of animation, thanks for displaying!

Love it! Very fun, and even without dialogue you get a good sense of the characters so well done. I like both endings, but...unless Spaniard is a secret cross dresser or dandy (getting flashbacks to Pacino in Stardust) I don't see why he would want or need a chest full of wigs and clothes in his treasury that are to Louis' taste. Though that could make it quite hilarious with James' and the Spaniard's reaction...and now imaging buff Spaniard dressed up like Louis
Then again, you said you might have another ending anyway but oh the possibilities...and your story boards look so nice, I can never draw quickly and nicely.

Lol, I've got "ending 2" branded into my brain.

Anyways, fantastic artwork as always, and an even better storyboard!

I really like the aspect of the relation of Louis and James, which I always see as a wild ''Tom and Jerry'' chase. They are ennemies, but they don't hate themselves at the point of killing each other and, also, to ally themselves. Since you like the idea behind your work, i can only wonder if relationship between France and england always was like this (or at least in this era). the fact that they do ally against the spanish (sorry, I did forget his name even if i love the design >.<) show how the powerful and ''noble'' Spain, that was on the top of the world after getting the gold of the Aztecs and Mayans, did fall for the new power.

At least, in the historical view. You did mentionned that the cloths of the spiniard were much older than the ones of Louis and of James. Could be a hint that Spain was, indeed, outdated already, while conserving part of his past strenght. I just love the hint, even if it wasn't intentionnal :P

Also did like the part that they both leave their man on the side while spying in the exact same way (I do also imagine these man starting to chat/drink/getting new wigs while waiting their respective comander/captain, but that's just me XD).

I really look toward this, even if I just barely discover your artwork. You got the ideas and the talent, I do hope you will go with what you like^^

P.S: Option 2 for the chest is awesome XD

It depends which era you're referring to. In the early 1600s Spain claimed all of the Caribbean, so most nations just looted their ships and harassed their navy for gold. During the Queen Anne's War which lasted twelve years, however, Spain was allied with France while England was allied with the Netherlands, most likely because Spain and France were Calothic while England had reverted to Prostestant since Henry VIII's reign.
DarkHardStone Featured By Owner Oct 25, 2012
It is true that Spain had their peak and they did become the most powerful nation in Europe (As I lke to say, every country does have their moment to shine). Alliances with Spain were indeed made on the acount of religion, but this is a part of Europe history (since it was one part of their life and also the importance of the pope and the clergy (Spain did start to colonise America after the approval of the pope too) and the fact that Henry VIII decided to become the center of the church in England was a turning point).

But, the more gold that Spain got from America, the Spainiards were going to their downfall. With mercantilism, gold and other rare metals were the proof of your power, ultimately destroyed the country. With their gold, Spain stopped to produce and became economicaly dependent to other countries (such as France and England if my memory is correct). There is around only 1/10 of the gold that actualy stayed in Spain hands, the other lost to corruption or other countries.

They were still a powerful country, but I think that this gold was the start of their downfall already (which is easy since we already know the results ^^')

The French flag goes seem a bit forced. The English flag makes sense though. I do like the part where James is established at the door. I do love the muttering Louis makes when he notices James is in trouble. I laughed terribly at the scene of the heels. Oh that was priceless! I'm unsure about the "Go" part being in french unless it is well established somewhere in the story that James can speak french. Otherwise makes no sense. I love Louis getting yanked in by James. Where it says that Louis runs to the door when the Spaniard is battering it down. Some reason I could see Louis strutting over to the door with a swing of the hips and driving James nuts with the way he is taking his time. Then when the ribbon is tossed James makes a comment like, "About time." and Louis ether says something back or just smirks. As for the alternate thing. I love the heel to the face but you already showed off the shoes. So I like the gag the Spaniard bit better. However I think it needs something else. Like a gloat or a flirt or something. Maybe a line said to him. As for the ending.

I pick #2!!!

That was is hilarious. Though I am curious as to why there were costumes in there.

The gold one is boring. Though if there was gold. I would not see sharing. I could see Louis tricking James somehow and getting it all. That's the only way I could see it ending with gold. Some sort of fight or trick.
Quarter-Virus Featured By Owner Oct 24, 2012  Professional Filmographer
All good points, but - especially where the ending is concerned - I am not thinking of the characters as characters, but as the ideals they are supposed to represent. Having free thinking/minority groups (Louis) run off with the gold after having fooled society/government (James) is not a message I want to convey.
Angel-Dust-Ryuuki Featured By Owner Oct 24, 2012  Student General Artist
I get what your saying. I was not thinking in terms of groups just characters. Though as said I still love the idea #2 because just thinking of the look on Jame's face if there were a bunch of costumes. I might as well tern into the Joker at how much I would laugh.

Oh wow, I loved reading this! You can definitely ignore the rest of this, I think WAY too much, but I do hope something is a good opinion that might help.

I do agree that when James arrives at the gate it isn't necessary. We already know where he's going and I think it would be more dramatic to go from the uptight British to Louis preparing for his heist without anything in between.

My first instinct with the initial fight between Louis and the Spaniard I thought it was one of those 'its been done' feelings. Sword sticking in the wood and all, but, at the same time the slap is classic! This was just my first impression, now I rather like the fight as it's a combo of the tried and true and Louis' own unique flair. Just figured I'd bring up the thoughts.

Unless there's a particular reason why Louis wouldn't want to harm a painting I think it might be better if he uses it against James to then get the upper hand and drive him back down the steps. I like that he stops to adjust it, it's funny, but at the same time it stops the action and feels a little awkward in its placement.

I'm thinking the Spaniard's 'return' should be adjusted a bit. The way it's set up now seems a little odd, why draw attention to himself before getting the sword out? From a battling perspective it isn't a good mood, but if he's red in the face and in general the hot headed type I could see it. Though in that case he should probably really FORCE that sword out, maybe even a few splinters for dramatic effect.

I could also picturing him throwing down his helmet to gain attention and changing views to see him from Louis' POV with the splintered wood from the forceful remove afterwards.

Though after typing all of that up I remembered that the hat is over his eyes, and kind of hard to pull that off with one hand full of the sword he just got free XD

I think a nice touch might be is, when Louis turns and is muttering about being nice, he does it in French. Dunno why, I just know when I'm exasperated/frustrated that I go right back to the basics.

I LOVE the touch with the heels, even just seeing the story board it made me grin. I'm curious if the voice I pictured in my head will match up to the actors you eventually choose.

I think it would be perfect if he tells him to go in French. There's just something...right about him yelling 'aller!' don't know what.

For the ending I think I prefer him tying his mouth shut, that way James also has his part in it more easily. Also funnier and seems more Louis' style.

For the alternate endings my vote we go to number too, perhaps purple cloth? Bolts of cloth? I don't know what Spain might be known for in the clothing department... I also had an image of Louis' crew somehow sneaking in and having gotten the chest, but obviously that would entail a whole heck of extra work.

I think that this will make a great short! The pacing seems right in my opinion, not too short where you're still trying to figure out what's going on, not too long where it...well, isn't a short! Or has dead weight that adds time, I personally like shorts that are more lighthearted and fun, no huge details needed about the character and world...a sampler...dang I'm hungry right now.

I'm really interested to see the alterations, it's always amazing to see an animation take shape, especially ones that are filled with such life. Keep up the fantastic work, I'm really glad that you decided to share all of this with us :)
