"Ah! it's you, master, is it?" said Clopin. "I was there myself, by God! Well, comrade, because you bored us to death this morning, is there any reason why you shouldn't be hanged tonight?"

i'd live with Clopin and his Truands. from what i read on wikipedia, i imagined him "wiser" looking, like small wrinkles around his eyes and a few gray hairs. other than that, amazing! thank you so much!

I agree! I'm reading the book right now and there are times I wish Clopin would've just hanged him and had done with it. >.< But I have the same problem: trying NOT to imagine the Disney characters as the book characters. (Impossible....)

I found the book in a Singaporean library, but it's on loan. I have to wait for the person to return it. in the meantime, I'm self-teaching myself French so that hopefully in some point of my life, I'll be able to read the original.

I love this picture! He looks very in character :)

I agree about Gringoire, but the person I couldn't stand in the book was Esmerelda, ugh! She annoyed me.

I just read an excellent little fic that brings more of BookClopin out in MovieClopin. He's a man of many masks, and his namesake beggar facade is but one of them. I was reminded of this pic while reading it.

The one-shot I found is here: [link]

I just love his pose, can't help but feel the urge to high-five him xD

And I hate my copy of HoND. For some reason, Clopin is called 'Zoekenhoeker'(it's Dutch, I'm not sure how you would translate it), so I didn't even know he was Clopin until I saw this D:

Yeah, and it also doesn't help that Zoekenhoeker/Clopin is also the beggar in the first chapter, so my mental image of him was something like the 'I'm free!/dang it' guy from the Disney movie xD

lol I am reading the book as well. It's sad you don't get to see him much in the story. Still the parts he is in are great. Also I would love to hear your reaction to the ending. I'm not sure how far you are so I wont say anything...but I still wanna hear it ^-^

I've spoiled the book for myself already. I couldn't find it in bookstores so I did a lot of research. If you're talking about the part where Clopin dies, I've already drawn my share.

That line makes me laugh, too. I like how you depicted him here, with his badass book attitude.

Hey, Pheobus is a hell of a lot worse than Gringoire. Trust me on that.

This is such a great portrayal of Clopin (as you delve deeper into the book, you'll figure out why!) And don't worry about this version looking a little like the Disney one; I think keeping some familiarity is a good idea. As for the rarity of finding the book itself, I had the same trouble in the US and here in Italy. Actually, the first place I came across it without being wait-listed was in the little bookshop in the North Tower of Notre Dame...I got the last copy ;) Keep up the fantastic work, you're awesome!

Good going! I hadn't watched HoND since I was four when I saw the Notre Dame, so I'd completely forgotten about it. As a twelve year old dragged around the European countryside seeing cathedral after cathedral and art gallery after art gallery I was pretty dang tired of churches when we finally saw it. Didn't appreciate it.

Oh sheesh, I know the feeling. You get numb and they all start running together, but it's normal. It's like "Oh, this looks like an interesting church!" Then you wander in, but one Madonna starts looking like all the rest! If you ever get the chance, and especially after you read the chapters where Hugo describes the Old Paris, visit Notre Dame again, it's awesome! If that isn't motivation enough, take a tour of the Catacombs because they're in the same area as the Court of Miracles is in the book, and the area is nearly the same as Hugo describes. Very cool, just watch your wallet! :) Take care!

Aw i love Gringoire! =((
idk i love the whole book. Definitely the most beautiful thing I've ever read. Gotta say my fav character is Notre Dame herself. I love that massive chapter(s) that just goes on and on about the history of "the edifice." I think I cried it was so beautiful to me.

I never finished the last part because of school assignments, and when i tried to get back into it i had forgotten what the heck was going on, so im gonna have to start over... i was so close to the end too.

you hadn't read it? strange. it was a combination of the disney film and your artwork of him that made me purchase a copy. which i adored, but now want to shoot them all for stupidity, especially Gringoire and La Esmeralda. but surprisingly not Frollo, i like him a lot and pity him in the books.

'that is, are you a beggar, a thief or a vagabond?''
''no sir, i am meerly an authour...''
''i have heard enough, HANG HIM!''
