WARNING: OLD ART!! The art and comments in this Deviation may no longer represent the artist's current views or interests.

Turns out shading something to resemble Film Noire is a lot harder than I thought. Now it just looks like a black and white film despite my best efforts to improve my rendering and contrast ... or lack thereof.

Oh well.

He's kind of a big fat jerk.

I think you did a good job, but yeah with film noir you have to remember to use a lot of high contrast and very dramatic shadows. You don't have any stark white or black in there, which is key. Everything is basically the same gray, if you don't mind me saying. All your shadows should be black or almost black, as well as your background. I think if the sky and water were quite black, with the moonlight like you have it, it would make a big difference. Right now the characters just blend in to the background. Highlights on the faces and the fire should have a brighter glow as well. The overall grayness of the characters is good, you just need to make all the shadows on faces, clothing, etc. darker and much more dramatic to get that noir feel.

There are also a lot of other things that define film noir such as cinematographic elements, but I don't know if you wanted to try for those too. :) I hope you don't mind my little critique...

I really love the idea of a goblin warlock being a mobster.

Looking at stillframes of film noir on google, I think you didn't push the darks hard enough. The greyscale is still great, really sets the mood.

This isn't my character in any way, shape, form or format, and my knowledge of the goblin mobster thus far is rudimentary.

But if I were to guess... it's a matter of pride, or upholding his reputation.
Seems like something a gangster would do.

 Noir WoW! Great work with grayscale. :)
You know, I'd like to ask - when you were working on this, have you considered black space between panels instead of final white? Would it be too heavy color setting, or somehow unefficient for print? :?

:iconquarter-virus:
Quarter-Virus Featured By Owner Apr 8, 2014  Professional Filmographer
I did try both black and white for the paneling, but it sucked all of the focus right out of the images, just too overpowering. The general rule is that you make objects in the foreground darker, and objects in the background lighter and more faded, so I can see the logic in that.

Hnnnngh, no no no no nope. First I was like "cool, we get to see this bastard in action, being a cruel mob man", but when I saw what he did... ugh, coldness crawled through my backbone, because the thought of drowning is horrible. I never like the parts in movies where they tie the victim, put a heavy object on them and then just throw them overboard - it's horrible when I know there's no one to save them. Like the scene doesn't show the drowning one, only the throwers. *shivers* Nope nope nope.

Suddenly I have a feeling I DON'T want to tease this goblin too much, so I won't get thrown to a lake myself ;__; Poor Tony. May you rest in peace.
Well done on this comic! Can't wait to see more, especially about your hunk trolls ♥

I can sympathise with that. Drowning or explosive decompression ... basically anything that has to do with not being able to breath and crushing darkness and pressure. The movie 'Gravity' had me squirming inside because it deals with my fears exactly, but the likelihood of me winding up jettisoned into space is, thankfully, pretty low.

Suffocating or getting crushed is a horrible way to die, makes my skin crawl. I haven't seen the movie Gravity myself, but I bet watching it wasn't all that fun. I really don't like space movies or movies that have submarines. The possibility of a suffocating death is too high :'D If they can't breath, I start to breath deeper as I watch something like that. And narrow places, where I can not turn myself around... nope. Thank goodness there's quite small changes for those to happen. Well.. at least for to be sent to space, as you said.
But the movies that I have never watched or never will watch are the Eight-legged freaks or Aracnophobia. The title of the second movie tells you why, haha. I'm so afraid of spiders that sometimes it makes me laugh. The tiniest spider can make me cry and scream, and the bigger the spider is, the bigger is my reaction and horror. No matter if the movie's a comedy or a horror story, if I see a spider there, I turn around damn quickly or cover my eyes with a yelp.

I'm okay with spiders if they're little. I lived in Australia for two and a half years and we shared the house with several Huntsmen spiders that would show up in random corners and scare the bajeezus out of me: as  big as your hand with their legs, but they never did much and they were harmless to humans. Besides after killing the 500th gigantic spider in an MMO you get used to it.

Cockroaches though, don't get me started on those bastards.

*internal screaming and nervous sweating* Oh my dear lord and holy balls. Everytime I remember how BIG some house spiders can be in foreign countries, I suddenly feel relieved that I live here in Finland. The biggest spiders here are about the size of my thumb or a little bigger, but they still do make me cry if they scare me too bad. But as big as my hands... *flails* Oh, and somewhere they're as big as your head! Watched some funny fail videos in Youtube and suddenly they show a guy taking a huge tupperware bowl, which is a little bigger than his head. Then he goes to a wall with the spider. My reaction is internal screaming and then yelping when the spider jumps towards the guy.

I never get used to the spiders in WoW. The hairy ones aren't that bad, but the god damn spiders with slim legs... my friends laugh their asses off as I try to kill them. My style of killing is just throwing spells, walking backwards and nervously laughing and sometimes almost screaming "no no no no, go away go away, don't come here someone kill it!"... ahahaha.. ha.
One time we were hunting a damn huge spider with thin legs, for a quest. My friend said that the spider is really hard to find and that it doesn't spawn easily back. I was like okay and then e started to kill the little ones.. or at least he started, I was just staying a little futher away.
Then I saw it and made a high pitched yelp and he asked what, so I shouted to the mic that it's near me, on my right. So he killed it and we continued to kill the little ones. As I got some courage and decided to kill a small spider, the huge god damn bastard spawned right ON TOP OF ME! The scream I let out startled my friend and then I just started to laugh hysterically and we killed it again. Man, that thing really got me. "Doesn't spawn easily".. my ass... right on me and the little spider I was killing. I let out a scream and run away, friend asking what the hell happened.

Cockroaches... I don't know how to react on those things... the huge hissing cockroaches make my skin crawl and I can't imagine myself holding or touching a regular one either. Moths are the same. Their body somehow disturbs me, and even though I perfectly know that they don't bite, something inside me says that they bite. So I don't want to touch them. There's a GIF about a moth that's as huge as a human's palm, crawling on someone's hand. NOPE.
