WARNING: OLD ART!! The art and comments in this Deviation may no longer represent the artist's current views or interests.

"Oh god! There's two of them!"

Several people commented that Louis and James resemble Dorian and Klaus from Yasuko Aoike's manga 'From Eroica With Love'. I am not a fan of anime or manga, and I'm sure every artist can sympathize with how annoying it is to have your characters constantly compared to something else, but now that I've drawn it maybe people can shut up about it.

I..I.. saw this manga before but just ignored it, such a shame. XD

I found the humour got old fairly quickly, so I'd say you weren't missing much. The characters went from entertaining with potential for development, to predictable and two-dimensional, so I only stuck through it long enough to include it as a case study in my dissertation in homosexual misrepresentation in the media.

Wow, you talk so smartly. O.O
Usually some people would just say "XD". That's not nice at all.

This. Is . Awesome! So a fan of your lovely art! XD

Well, I think it's at least clear who's more FABULOUS here. Similiarities aside, there are good, memorable designs and there are those bland, seen-it-a-thousand-times ones. No matter how many long-blod-haired, tall, skinny, foppish men you'll put next to Louis, he's one of a kind and it's HIM who we'll remember as the "one and only".
Not to mention that after some time spent reading manga, all characters begin to look kinda same-ish. There are just too many. And how many fabulous french gay pirates can you name? I can think of one...

Aww, thanks dear. :) That's sweet, it's nice that people think so highly of Louis!

WOW....just wow...
and i know, i really hate when people compare characters... but yes it will allways happen, oh well!
but its great you take it this way, i mostly get pissed...ironicly though, I have a character that reminds me of Louis, but dont worry, its mostly the blond hair and clothes they wear XD nothing more, they are quite different specially in face features(and mine is not gay lol)
any way! im a fan of you and your work! keep it up! ;D

You did a great job! Regardless of what you said in the post, not everyone needs to like anime/manga. Your drawings remind me of every american cartoon/cultural aspect I have ever seen. IT's a compliment if anything. I love your style.

Heh, so many pictures of Louis that I find myself tucking away for study resources simply for the sheer detail of his frocks. ♥
I really love it so much!

I did stories years ago about monsters going to school and college. Really wish I would have sold the stories since out of nowhere Monster High popped up and an anime series named Rosario + Vampire in Japan .... I thin I even started writing it before Scooby went to the monster school, too, but no one would understand my scribbling at the time.

And then, James and Kaus went out for a drink...of German instant coffee to commiserate. Did you know Eroica and his gang are explicitly based on Led Zeppelin? What goes around comes around. So what if everything ever is oddly coincidentally similar?
Quarter-Virus Featured By Owner Apr 15, 2013  Professional Filmographer
I did do some digging into Eroica and I found that. Louis was the product of several months of development and his final appearance was the result of a lot of different influences, but not one of them was Robert Plant. Funny how two entirely different people with two entirely different concepts can arrive at a very similar end result. =P

I am immensely worried about a movie idea that is floating around with Disney right now about a young male who is a cartoon raised by human parents -- using similar logic behind Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I'm extremely worried about this because I created an OC years and years ago who is a young male cartoon raised by human parents, and it is the story of his struggle dealing with life and growing up, etc. If this movie becomes a reality, GUESS WHAT, I get to be called the copy cat. And if it weren't an important character to me, well maybe I could just poo-poo, but he's one of my "big 3," -- you know, the ones you draw over and over again and are a part of your soul now. At this point, all I can do is selfishly hope that movie never makes it to the --pardon the pun -- drawing board. I don't think I could cope with the accusations I'd surely receive.

And that was my contribution to your artwork lol.

Ouch, poor you. My sister and I were bummed that the story to James Cameron's Avatar matched very closely one of our original stories and worlds ... that we invented when we were five and seven years old respectively. Says something for his storytelling these days ...
Techta Featured By Owner Apr 1, 2013  Hobbyist General Artist
lol his story-telling ever. Except for Aliens, I liked that one. Well I guess Terminator 2 was good. Okay I agree, it's just his latest. But then, I guess it's cool he's building submarines now. >.<

You are amazing. Your work is brilliant. And you probably already know that. I fell in love with your style and your characters the moment I saw them. Louis is unique. All your characters are unique. *-* They can't be compared with other characters. Now excuse me, I'm going to stalk your gallery.

I admit that I do enjoy yaoi, but I can say with utmost honesty that I never once thought Louis was hot for James. To be honest, I actually adore the way they interact and to have a romantic interest in there would just be wrong. Well, that just might be because I simply love Louis. It really shows just how much time you spent working on him. His personality comes out beautifully in his actions and facial expressions. The same can be said for James as well. I am super glad that you didn't scrap this project! I'm eager to see the final animation that I watch the animatic up to three or four times a week for a laugh.

As a fellow artist, I also understand how utterly frustrating and annoying it is to have someone compare an original character to one that is from a manga/anime. It's worse when you didn't even know about them in the first place. Louis vaguely makes me think of Lestat from Interview with a Vampire. However that is because of his hair style and colour. Other than that I see no correlation between the two. (Except maybe that they are both European?) That's as far as I can go though.

I know what you mean on people saying all the OCs that a person draws look the same. Of course they would! If one character is by one artist then that is their STYLE and even if they do improve artistically the characters that they draw will have SOME similarities like maybe all of the way their hands are drawn are similar if not the same/ style of hair/ shape of their eyes etc. A lot of my OCs share basically the same body shape and obviously differ from male to female. Bascially what I'm trying to say is people will always say that your/my/ any artists OCs look the "same."

I've had the same thing happen to me even in my fan characters too. Someone even had the nerve to tell me to change the gender of one of my characters. With no discernible reason whatsoever.
Quarter-Virus Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2013  Professional Filmographer
Change the gender, even? I don't understand that mentality. If you want to see a character that looks like XYZ, then draw it yourself. If you can't draw, learn to, that's what the rest of us did.
Lilac-Vrt-Olligoci Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2013  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Considering I don't normally allow people to draw my OC's, and that this particular character has a twin sister in the first place it would be pointless to genderbend him. Yeah. I didn't take that person's 'advice' well.

Usually I tend to state my subtle inspirations though, just so I get it out of the way, but I still get people saying "Looks like this guy from this obscure media."
Quarter-Virus Featured By Owner Feb 19, 2013  Professional Filmographer
Sometimes I state them, too, but I still get people asking if I was inspired by the very same person I stated - ON that picture - because people these days just can't read.

Would it help if I said Louis looks like Jareth? I mean look at that pretty blond hair! Just joking XD

It is hard since now with the web every one can draw from the same influences, and while some can understand the period costume others do not. I find them quite charming myself. Especially since I favor rococo and Venusian fashion.

However man if you love them it does not matter what others think. Because if they spent as much time with them as you do, they would understand the main differences.
IceFox11 Featured By Owner Feb 14, 2013  Student Traditional Artist
Hi it's my first time seeing your work, the draw that caught my attention was the one called "Your most Special"; I mean it was so interesting and cute (I could feel the love). Well what I was saying.....when I see "this" image the only thing I could think was "Oh my God I can understand the reference" I didn't thought about the similarities until you mentioned ( I hope you serve that as comfort). By the way I like the way you draw the Major Klaus (straight), I mean the original (no offense) but looks so gay that usually I can't concentrate because he remembers me a friend I had named Adriana (it's just wierd, I mean he is suppose to be straight gay wth with that face?!).

Quarter-Virus Featured By Owner Feb 15, 2013  Professional Filmographer
I find the Eroica style distracted because to me Klaus looks exactly like Eroica, so "gay" would be accurate, yes.

good points my dear, and as a comic artist (though i have not posted any of my comic here yet) i thank you for sticking up for the truely origonal artists among us. I know how hard it is to come up with an entirely new character, and not want to kill every living thing in a ten foot radious when people tell you over and over, oh he/she sounds like bla bla bla.

i<3 your efforts dear!

Dear gods, every time somebody says "He/she/it looks like X" i want to stripe piranha fish to my fists and start highfiving people's faces.

Thankfully i rarely face this problem but still it's very unpleasant. Especially when people compare my characters to something i have never heard about.
Manamba Featured By Owner Feb 4, 2013
True. So totally annoying when someone says that your character ain't unique at all. Ahem, people, there's SO many people and characters in this world that it's IMPOSSIBLE to create a completely unique character. Also, it's plain stupid to compare, just because. And to top it all, many artists and other creators may be under some influence at the moment of character creation, but usually, some time after, they change their character's history, motives, personality, sometimes looks as well and it's not only because people are constantly complaining. It's because creators finally understand what they want and they cave deeper into their characters to find at least something that will make them new and pretty unique.

I totally love not only your art and never ending ideas behind what you create, but I also love that from time to time you post and express your thoughts and feelings. It's not only inspiring but also good for you to express yourself and let the steam out.

Aw, thank you. I always get iffy about uploading more "serious" things ... although this picture is a humorous jab at this aggravating thing, so I wonder just how serious it is. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Ugh, I've been having this exact same problem lately. I've been trying to focus more on monster/alien design, and unfortunately for me, I'm a fan of smooth-faced critters. Apparently, that automatically means EVERY SINGLE SMOOTH-FACED THING I MAKE IS AUTOMATICALLY SLENDERMAN. Doesn't matter if they're clothes-less, have facial features, multiple limbs, bioluminescence, digitigrade legs, and separating mouthparts. No, they clearly MUST be Slenderman. It makes me sad because I actually like Slendy but I just....want him to go away just so I can have my sense of originality back.

Actually, someone mentioned a very personal design looking like Slendy to me in a Skype chat, and I politely told him why it's inconsiderate to say such things....He argued, I linked him to a rather angry journal I wrote on it in which I explained it a little better....An hour or so of heated arguing later and I was left deeply offended, alienated, insulted, and compared to a child-killing mass murderer. So there's that. I feel your pain :/
