White or brighter yellow/red combo with black or dark brown pants and he will look like a coral snake.  Big threat full stop.

why not a deep red with a richer goldish color??? or maybe a bright mustard color??? i know, sounds nasty, but you would be suprised!!! instead of changing the color, change its hue and see what you get...

I'd stick with some yellow, due to fact that he's Spanish.
Red = British
Blue = French
Yellow = Spanish
Grey (in my opinion) is a bit more of a German color and Green is Russian, so some of the characters look a bit weird if they're too grey or Green.
For some reason, Red and Yellow stripes makes me think of Papal Guards [link]

Well to throw my two cents in here I really like the red garbs (specifically 3rd one in on the first row) that one has a strong warning presence to it, you wouldn't want to mess with him and like your note said the darker armor makes that look heavier and him more likely to be able to lob off your head with a well placed hit, its an angry color and in heraldry it means one is a warrior and/or has military strength, which obviously Santiago has. With the worry of his hair getting lost perhaps there it can be lightened up a bit? Or as I have read in these other comments keep the silver streak..It shows he's an older man, but with that he is dangerous, he's been around longer and knows how to fight, fair and dirty both I imagine. The red also puts him apart in the small line up, since he would stand out against Louis and James both in a fast paced scene if need be if Louis is running around in his vibrant outfits and James in his darker black and blues.

But if red is not your thing I liked the green and black garb in row 2 (perhaps maybe even trying one lighter a shade to make it stand out more against the black perhaps?) The green is a strong color, noble, in the time period reds blues green and purples were 'royal' colors after all, cause to get the jeweled tones in the fabric was extremely expensive which is why pirates stole those most, it was a mockery near to those higher classes. Green would also add to a villainous side but not be as sharp as the red, make him more cunning and sly one to think before he attacks where red would make me thing immediately of a rampaging bloke.

And my third favorite would be the very last one at the bottom of yellow and black its a caution sign, not to mess with him. Its also a color scheme I find rarely used. <shrug>

And now that I have rattled off here I am going to go back and hide in my geeky corner. :rofl: Hope this helped a little if nothing else helps cross off one thing on the list. :)

He will probably be wearing red and black in the final animation, as suggested. I was under the impression that blue and especially purple were royal, expensive colors, which was why Royalty in Rome wore purple.

i think it's very important to include red in santiago's design. red connotes power, robustness, and most of all, THREAT.

louis and santiago both threaten the commodore, but they do it in very different ways. louis is a false threat--the commodore perceives him as threatening even though the only reason they aren't allies is that the commodore won't allow it. if a person identifies with a stereotype, they feel that their very identity is threatened when they come across someone who defies it. but someone who breaks a stereotype doesn't do it to hurt someone who doesn't. they do it because the stereotype just isn't true for them.

i think that's a message that needs to get out, because backlash against stereotype-breakers is stupid, horrible, and way too common.

santiago is great for that because he can show the commodore (and the audience) the difference between a false threat and a true one. also, he shows that to overcome threats, people who are very different from each other should work together. the best way to get people to quit sniping at each other is to force them to work together. :D

And here I am thinking that Louis is the main character with Santiago being his threat rather than a threat to James.

I'm thinking that Louis was a threat to Santiago with his chaotic "do as I want" nature, which in his case also exemplifies the embrace of femininity within a masculine structure which is not at all kosher in his black & white world of extreme macho strict regulation & order..
Sure with the commodore Louis could be a threat to his identity (and self portraits) but for Santiago the threat is broader than that like a virus that could plague his entire world.(this compounds when James & Louis team up) Especially in the pocket book area when Louis came from money turning away from it (giving a spoiled brat opinion) to live only on what he and his crew need while I see Santiago having to work his way up & his insatiable thirst to acquire massive wealth and possibly be surrounded with others who are just as easily paid off to do as he wants.

Perhaps it's too cliche' but that's what I came up with having so much focus put on Louis.

good point, good point!

i think the focus on louis has more to do with the fact that he's just more interesting, both design-wise and personality. i know that i for one have latched onto him, and a great deal of sak's viewership has done the same. (don't worry, Hapless Ensign, you're still my favorite!)

Maybe it's just me, but the first thing I thought of when seeing the yellow and black striped one was a bumblebee (kinda of like how the red and green looks Christmasy). Personally, I wouldn't choose it because of that reason, but it's up to you. I like the black and red better.

I'd personally go with the black and yellow one (last one). Mostly 'cause his pointy goatee and posture already make him look like a villain, so red would actually make his villain-ness even more obvious. (well depends how obvious you want him to be XD)
Also, I'd make his hair a slightly darker tone of grey with white streaks, so it would be easier to distinguish from the armor :)

I like the yellow/black variation on the bottom right the best. The red hints at aggression more openly, but his posture and build also say violence, so using colors to convey that meaning isn't strictly necessary. Yellow, being similar to gold, hints more at greed/wealth to the modern mind despite yellow being a relatively simple dye, and his simple, practical and grizzled look could use some of that, because greed is otherwise not apparent in his design.
I don't think it would blend with Louis' hair. The blond color you're using for him is a warmer hue. That yellow will almost look green next to it, which could also imply a sort of sick jealousy. Is that appropriate for this character?
Maybe you should make a color swatch sheet with all three characters next to each other, so you can see how their colors interact?

The medium grey armor is best for beat up looks. but the grey hair gets lost. Perhaps you might try black with grey streaks.

As for the clothing color. the 3 bottom to the right are a toss up for me.
I like the red and yellow as a nationality pop. But the black and red is so sinister looking for a bad guy. And the yellow and black kinda makes me think of an angry bee.

So the red and yellow may be the best, you get the nationality, and the hint for a greed of gold thing you liked. but you may wanna see what the black pants looks like with the red and yellow.

hope that's helpful.

Dark armour feels 'spanish' and lighter clothing under it would work, just no cream, nor light pants.
Have you tried using the black armour from the second-lowest row against the red/yellow, yellow/black or red/black shirts/pants from the bottom row?
Or even black armour with the blue/red striped from the top-right one, will look less medieval with dark armour.
Just my opinions, do with them what you like :)

I agree with what you're leaning toward. My best solution is to take a coin and flip it--whatever it lands on is the final choice. It's the Schrodinger's cat bit; both choices are completely viable! I also liked the red and black with the black armor. It would leave you a little less to animate, and the blackened metal contributes to the aged sort of look, at least in my head.

But not the pink. Leave the pink to Louis. Which, if it ever came down to something completely non-canon, Louis could "replace" all of Santiago's outfits with something more...fabulous. :plotting:

My girlfriend hurt herself laughing at the pink and yellow ones on the second line. I probably would run too!

On a more serious note, I would have to say bottom right corner, the red and black is my favorite, though to keep a bit more contrast to the armor and draw attention back to his face a little better, I would darken the main part of his hair slightly, although leave the light streak like it is. Gives it a little more accentuation without taking away the grizzled aged effect.

I like the yellow/black best. The dark colors concentrated in the middle (pants/armor) make him look more imposing and serious. He doesn't really seem like the sort of guy who would wear a lot of color.

I was also leaning towards the bottom two, (not that my vote matters ;) ) However just to add my two cents as I'm sure a hundred others are; red tends to be more for the violent characters. Mostly for the fact that just the right type of red can hide the blood easier for when inflicting wounds. Especially for being in the military, you don't have to fuss about getting cleaned up for the political figures if it's already hidden. -don't know his military rank if that applies... (also less fussy & more violent for contrasting to Louis)

I like the last one in row 3 and the two middle ones of row four. Totally agree about all the red comments, it suits him most out of all the characters. The yellow works as an accent with the red, but if you put it with the black, it reminds me of a bumblebee. I think the darker armour looks best with the grey hair, but for the lighter armour, perhaps a darker hair color with the streak? (KEEP THAT SILVER STREAK!!! Salt&Pepper is sooooo sexy. ;D )

I like the last two as well, especially the yellow combo because the pants are dark, so I feel like your eyes get pulled from his feet up to his face. At least mine did, it was kind of like when you run into someone and you just look them over in horror, realizing that they get bigger as you go up. Warm colors are the way to go on him in my opinion (although I can't see this guy in orange XD) And I feel like his gray hair almost gets lost against the armor but the heaviness the color gives suits him as well... Somehow the light gray and the black just don't do it for me. And either way, red or gold you still get to hint at his heritage!
