I think the blue/white one is the most accurate for the period.

You should have tried to put him in some pink. Louis would have loved that. :D

Red jacket with white trousers and brown hair looks best. Red to show a bit of nationality, white to stand out from the silhouette and brown hair because it's typical of most male heroes. Awesome drawings as usual :)

5th, 8th & 9th are my favourites.
5th because it's unusual for a hero, but looks very sharp without being "fancy" or flamboyant.
8th because I'm a sucker for nautical colour schemes and men in navy blue.
9th because the colours work well and they're low fuss, like him.

You could maybe pair number 8 with grey/darker trousers? That might make him seem more practical.

I didn't see you try out blue with black. A black coat with blue pants or black pants with blue coat seems like it might be interesting. I feel like you should keep the blue there somewhere because all the brown and black makes him seem gloomy. Commodore Hunter can be slightly cheeky sometimes, and I think you should avoid making him seem so gloomy.

As for me, navy blue jacket, white pants and definitely dark brown hair. It's amazing and suits the character very well :3

I like the Navy with white pants as well. But a suggestion? A real commodore's jacket from the period was dark/navy blue with a white placket. So maybe if you change the front part with the bottons white, then you can get away with the pants in blue and the white would be surrounded by the blue and be more 'centered' and grounded

I could try it but it might get too detailed. Technically all these characters are already too detailed for one single person to animate for three minutes of movie. But I'll see what I can do.

Oh, aye. But Louis' makeup alone is more complicated than James' coloring. Just giving suggestions as to what might help to give James the right look. Hehe, at least you aren't trying to fit in a Commodores waistcoat in there too.. which is apparently white with vertical gold stripes. I'm not sure I can really see him in that.. unless he were also wearing a wig and looking extremely uncomfortable.

Although from looking at more pictures, the blue jacket with white lapels is paired with white pants as well, and I think that's too much white for you. Maybe take the white less from 'pure' white to more 'lived in with no woman in his life' white? It might be more grounded for you, a buff, bone or even light grey? It would also get him away from Louis' "BRIGHT clean" white.

for hilarity sake, you could try brown pants XD I forget what movie that is from but it's pop cult now.

I actually like the navy blue jacket over all. it clearly defines his rank and that he's in the British navy. But the dark brown hair gets alil muddled. So the lighter brown would stand out more and still fit his personality. And I love the white pants for cleanliness and such. The brown boots fit fine but I kinda want to see the grey or black boots with the white for some reason. Black boots to shine were common even then but brown lends him more a casual sense... though I doubt ppl will think that far about it XD

Number 8 looks very good, the colors work well together, the details stand out and personally I think it makes him look very important/serious but if you're having trouble with pants you could always try a shade of off white or black. I don't know. I think it'll look great no matter what.

I think I'm going to generally agree with most of what everyone here is saying--go with the blue jacket and the white pants. It's clear that he's in the navy and that he's a high-ranking officer, and the contrast works much better than having solid blue. Also, don't worry about the white pants making him look like a push-over, because he's going to have to live up to British standards of order and cleanliness and there isn't a good way to get around it.

Ah, Monsieur Hunter...vous êtes très, très beau aujourd'hui! Le bleu est très certainement votre couleur, non? :flirty:

My French skills kinda suck. What I attempted to say, at least, was what I imagine Louis to say about this swatch set: "Ah, Monsieur Hunter...you are looking very, very handsome today! Blue is most certainly your color, no?"

I really enjoy the navy blue with the white pants. it would be what British naval officers wore. If he looks too much like he could be pushed around, consider darkening the trim like you did with the gray ones. Also, don't use the black ones, he looks too much like a British Rifleman, which he is not. Don't do red, enlisted men and the army wore red.

The white-on-white-on-more-white version left my girlfriend with the impression that he had turned into a steroid-inflicted hulk, before she took a closer look and saw his proportions were still the same. :XD:

I'm definitely in the Navy/White camp, but then I am a bit more of a stickler for closer to historical in this case. With Louis, he is a pirate and can wear whatever the hell he wants but with James, being closer to the real historical might be a good thing. I would give him darker boots though, like the ones in the Navy/Navy version (which by the way is my #2 choice.) I also think if you keep the blues significantly darker like that, it will provide enough contrast with Louis' brighter hue. (And if you have Santiago in a red-based outfit, it would visually hint at which sides are more likely to cooperate?)

The browns look ok, but they feel so Austrian or possibly militia, not British and definitely not Naval! *Tries to be so good and not go ballistic historical-nut*

All very good points. James can wear dark browns and blacks when he's a captain, but not with that promotion.

*Covers his blonde head* Ack no haha. I agree with everything you said about the red. It's too... attention grabbing for what I have seen of his character. Honestly I like the navy coat with white pants (It just screams sea buy to me), but I get the feeling that you like the brown top gray pants combo. It's a little dark for my tastes though. I love watching the creative process others :)

I notice there isn't a navy-coat with black-leggings combination. It looks pretty good in my head, and by keeping them deep colors it might give an air of cleanliness but also a bold personality. This is a completely unprofessional opinion, but I thought I'd throw it out there.
