WARNING: OLD ART!! The art and comments in this Deviation may no longer represent the artist's current views or interests.

For the past couple of years my besties at LASALLE and I have made it a tradition to do something silly or quirky for April First. This year, given the zonked-out states most of us are in these final weeks, the theme was "zombies".

Ahh, the joys of art school. I only wish my crappy community "animation college" in the backend of no-where was as quirky as this. Sounds like a fun place to work even if you do end up a bit frazzled! BTW, I must ask: what do you enjoy doing most as an animation student? I was always a fan of storyboarding. So relaxing!

Storyboarding is one of the most stressful parts for me, because I have to consider not just timing and pacing, but camera angles, number of cuts, panning shots, zooming shots, paralaxing, dialogue, which angle works best, how to plan out the action sequences, etc. etc. etc. And unlike when I draw comics, there's no room for inconsistency so it all has to flow.

I love character design the best. The working in progress and brainstorming.

Ha! Funnily enough I find character design to be pretty difficult and storyboarding reletively straightforward but then again I tend to think like a movie director anyways- everything is a series of montages, cuts, panning and soundtrack choices in my head. It might be an Asperger's thing-I dunno- but I find myself people watching a lot and my mind immidiately conjurs up the theme music and sweeping montages, whip-pans and close-ups of the random stories I make up about random people.
Ahh, strange how the artistic mind works. :)
I'm hoping to go to some form of community based life drawing classes to get back into the flow and work on my skills as anatomy has never been my strong point. I find your work very inspiring and I hope to be even half as profilific as yourself in the future. Good stuff! Keep it up! *bribes with green tea and Terry's Chocolate Oranges*

I "see in comic books", as I like to put it. I used to write a lot when I was younger, and just illustrate key scenes, but now whenever I have an idea it usually pans out in my head as a series of comic pages, like the most recent 'Sympathy for the Devil' ones. That was a fic/roleplay idea that I clearly saw as a comic, and so I illustrated it.

Good way to think. :) I just recently invested in a new sketchpad and the closest thing I could get to those AMAZING erasable blue lineart pencils I had in animation college. If you know where to get the real deal, I will give you cookies and cheese as it would be an absoulute godsend. I think they where called Lumaconte or something to that effect but they were great for sketching as they erased just like a regular pencil without leaving "ghost/shadows" behind after erasing and had the nifty benefit of not showing up when scanned into the computer.
Anyways, got a cheap imitation to test and I'm hoping to do a sketching tour of Dublin once the weather gets better. :)
Sorry for all the rambling- I just like talking to other people in the animation industry as they have lots of good things to talk about.

I've never heard of Lumaconte. I just use the standard 0.7 blue mechanical pencil lead I can find in stationary stores here, and draw on printer paper, but I've yet to have a problem with "ghost" lines. They're easy to clean up if there are any, and I like the sketchy effect it leaves, usually.

Where do you get those blue mechanical pencils? I've looked everywhere and I can't find them for the life of me. :(
I could easily use a regular grey one but for some reason the blue ones seem to make me more creative.
Just a quirk of mine I suppose.
Anyways, awesome gallery you have. :D I must commission you to draw my twin OCs if I ever find some monies.

Nicely done on the makeup, looks really sharp. That's kinda awesome and good to hear your school is a lot more laid back about that stuff than my alma mater was. When we tried a zombies vs. humans events the campus police started arresting people for carrying nerf guns on campus.

Oh America ... in Singapore realistic gun-replicas or gun-lighters are banned by law, but Nerf guns are too fakey so they're allowed. In fact the guy holding the water bottle is also holding a fake machine gun in the other hand, but it's clearly a toy so it's not illegal.

Yep. We're an odd nation. And technically that's how college campuses are supposed to work too - no replicas that are difficult to distinguish from the real thing - but they had a picture in the newspaper the next day of a guy being handcuffed while this bright orange and blue nerf gun is sitting on the hood of the police car. Then they decided to let the game continued, if all the 'humans' came in and 'registered their weapons' with the campus police. Not my school's finest moment.

Sadly, the computer blocks the view of the machine gun. :(
